<image:title>Find Out More About Dr. Kevin Jarrell - About Dr. Kevin Jarrell</image:title>
<image:caption>Other than creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Kevin is known for his “hilarious” jokes that his team “loves”. You may find him on his bike, with his guitar playing in some band or another or watching Formula 1 races recorded overnight, because being an early riser just ain't his thing. He has an unhealthy addiction to Crunchy Cheetos and kettle chips. If you ever see him running, you should start running too because something is chasing him. Dr. Kevin attended college at Purdue University for his undergrad and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Indiana University in 1996. A certificate in Advanced General Dentistry followed from Louisiana State University in New Orleans and his specialty orthodontic training and a Masters Degree was earned at St. Louis University. In 2000 he joined his father, Dr. David Jarrell, in practice. They worked together, ruling the universe as father and son, until Dr. Dave retired in 2003. Things aren't like they used to be in orthodontics. There is much more to it than just straightening teeth. We take a more "whole-body" approach, focusing on airway evaluation, healthy jaw joints and happy relaxed muscles, then esthetics and function. Efficiency in treatment is paramount because nobody wants their braces on for any longer than absolutely needed! Our office experience is unlike anything you would expect from a dental or medical office. People love it here because we love what we do, and we do it in a way that nobody else does.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is an orthodontist? - What is an Orthodontist?</image:title>
<image:caption>An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of crooked or misaligned teeth. Contrary to popular belief, orthodontics is not merely about the cosmetic appearance of patient smiles, but also about their oral health. Patients who visit an orthodontist for treatment often find it easier to brush their teeth and floss. This significantly reduces the risk of developing tooth decay or periodontal disease. Some of the conditions orthodontists treat include: Overbite, underbite, open bite and crossbite Gaps and spacing between the teeth Overcrowded teeth Did you know… …that at orthodontic offices, like our offices in Kokomo, Logansport and Noblesville you will see a dentist like Dr. Kevin who has spent an additional 2 or 3 years in specialty training following dental school? Dentists perform a broad range of work, with occasional orthodontic treatments. Orthodontists, on the other hand, only see orthodontic patients. So even if your family dentist offers to straighten your teeth, keep in mind that only an orthodontist has the type of specialized training that ensures ideal functional and aesthetic results Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to visit an orthodontist like Dr. Jarrell? You only need to visit an orthodontist if one or more of your teeth are improperly aligned. Keep in mind that it is never too late to see an orthodontist – whether child or adult. What should I expect during my first orthodontic visit? Dr. Jarrell will conduct an exam and use diagnostic imaging technology to determine the health of your tooth structure and whether orthodontic treatment is right for you. Your complimentary consultation will give you the opportunity to meet our team as well as learn more about orthodontics, receive a complete initial exam, and find out what treatment options will best meet your needs. During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Jarrell and his staff will: •Review your dental and medical history forms. •Provide a complete oral exam. •Help you create a customized treatment plan. •Discuss all financial information, insurance options, and payment plans. During your complimentary consultation, we will explain everything that you will need to know about your orthodontic treatment, so that you can choose what's best for you – no strings attached. What happens after my first meeting with an orthodontist? If you choose to begin your treatment, we can oftentimes take records that very same day! Orthodontic records typically consist of photographs, special xrays and a scan to make 3-D computerized models of your teeth. There is no substitute for having all the information that these diagnostic tests can provide. This is one area where taking shortcuts can lead to improper diagnosis and treatment. We will typically meet for a final consultation to discuss all aspects of your treatment plan. Then on your next appointment we can put on your braces, place your first Invisalign trays or insert your appliance. Then you're on your way toward your new smile!</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Braces at Jarrell Orthodontics - Braces</image:title>
<image:caption>Traditional Braces are everything but traditional at Jarrell Orthodontics. Dr. Jarrell uses self-ligating brackets, which uses doors rather than elastic ties to hold the wire in place. Benefits of this type of braces include better hygeine, faster adjustment appointments and less frequent appointments - meaning less time out of school or missed work. Other benefits may include faster, more comfortable tooth movement as less force is required to move the teeth due to less friction within the appliance. We have found that adults and kids both prefer less-visible braces on their teeth. For this reason our standard braces are tooth-colored ceramic on the upper teeth, where they are most noticeable. Lingual Braces Lingual braces are bonded to the tongue side of the teeth. They can be an option to correct mild crowding in a limited treatment approach on the upper or lower front teeth. The lower front teeth particularly are more susceptible to shifting as we get older. Usually treatment with these braces takes about 6 months and is invisible because the braces are on the back side of the teeth. Retainers Once you are out of braces and have your beautiful, straight teeth, you will be fitted with upper and lower retainers. Although movement may be slight, your teeth will not stay perfectly straight if you do not wear your retainers as instructed. Even teeth that have not been moved with Orthodontics will move over time from the forces of biting, clenching, grinding, and fillings or crowns, so it is imperative to wear your retainers as instructed upon completing your treatment. Normally you will receive a set of upper and lower clear retainers a day or so after your braces come off. Dr. Jarrell may also recommend a bonded lower retainer which is a wire glued on the back of the lower six front teeth. Immediately following your treatment you will be asked to wear your retainers full-time, 24/7, only removing them to eat and brush, for a limited period of time. After awhile Dr. Jarrell will tell you that it is acceptable to wear your retainers only at nighttime. Eventually, Dr. Jarrell will gradually limit how often you wear retainers. You will go down to a few nights a week and then over time, just a few nights a month. Retainers are a lifetime commitment. At no point in time should you ever stop wearing your retainers completely! Just remember this, “stop wearing your retainers when you would like to go through treatment again.” If you lose or break your retainers, you should call the office immediately so we can make arrangements to repair or replace your retainers, before your straight teeth shift. If you wait, your beautiful, straight teeth will become crooked and a retainer may not fix the problem completely without some type of retreatment. If your teeth have begun to shift and get crooked again, sometimes, we can regain your straight teeth sometimes in just a few months with aligner treatment and sometimes we must use braces for a short time to ensure straight teeth. After Dr. Jarrell sees you, he will be able to determine what is needed to correct the shifting. Retainer Instructions •Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. •Take your retainers out when eating… and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.) •Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used, but do not take the place of brushing. •When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them! •Initially, you may find they impair speech slightly. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster. •Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately. •If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself. •Always bring your retainers to your appointments. •Retainer replacement is expensive… with proper care they will last for years! •Remove retainers when swimming. •Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Treatment with Invisalign at Jarrell Orthodontics - Treatment with Invisalign</image:title>
<image:caption>Invisalign® is an orthodontic appliance system used to inconspicuously treat crooked and crowded teeth in adults, teens and even children. This modern take on braces features a system of clear aligner trays that are worn at all times with the exception of during meals and when brushing or flossing. The trays are custom fitted to the teeth, making them virtually unnoticeable when laughing, talking, and eating with other people. Patients receive a sequence of trays, each of which is slightly different than the one before. The aligners provide a slight resistance to the teeth, forcing them to move into alignment over time. With Invisalign®, adults and teens can achieve the smiles they’ve always wanted without feeling self-conscious about the mode of treatment. Did you know… wearing Invisalign® is in no way as restrictive as traditional braces? Many adults opt for this system not only because it is discreet, but also because there is no need to change your diet to avoid foods that could damage braces. This is because the Invisalign® system is free of braces and brackets, instead opting for a removable tray that can be taken out prior to meals. Also, Invisalign® fits well into busy adult schedules, as there is no need to attend frequent visits for wire adjustements. Most patients simply change to a new aligner tray every week. Frequently Asked Questions Am I a candidate for Invisalign®? If you have crooked or crowded teeth that are embarrassing to you or otherwise preventing you from achieving optimal oral health, Invisalign® could be the solution for you. Visit your Invisalign® dentist for a complete consultation to find out if you could benefit from clear orthodontics. What should I expect during my Invisalign® treatment? You will wear your aligners nearly all of the time, with the exception of about two hours per day. Invisalign® treatments are different for everyone, but most patients can achieve their ideal smiles within six months to a year. During that time, you can expect to make occasional orthodontic visits to monitor your progress. Will I need any post-treatment care? Following your treatment, you will need to wear a retainer each day to help protect your new smile. It is also important to continue visiting your dentist for routine check-ups and twice-yearly cleaning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Orthodontics for Children - Orthodontic Treatment for Children</image:title>
<image:caption>The majority of our patients undergoing orthodontic care are children and teens. When kids are young, their jaws are constantly growing to accommodate new teeth. It is during this time that the teeth are easily moved with orthodontics, allowing for a shorter treatment time – especially in orthodontic patients who undergo early treatment.Braces, retainers, and spacers are just some of the orthodontic appliances commonly used in children’s orthodontics. Although not all kids need orthodontic treatment, all kids need exams at an early age. Some signs that a child may eventually require orthodontic treatment include: -The jaw is disproportionate to the face -Has a habit of frequent thumb-sucking -Chronically breathes from the mouth rather than the nose -Primary teeth fall out too soon or too late -Exhibits malocclusion (overbite/underbite) -Visible crowding Did you know? …that children should have their first orthodontic screening no later than age 7? This orthodontic evaluation is used to identify jaw irregularities and developmental complications that could indicate the need for orthodontic treatment in the future. Early screenings make it possible to get early treatment, with some children beginning progressive orthodontic treatments as early as age 7. Frequently Asked Questions Do I need a referral from my dentist to bring my child to an orthodontist? No, you don’t need a referral. If your child is at least 7 years old or is exhibiting any of the symptoms listed above, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Your child’s orthodontist can take steps to correct a bad bite, fill in gaps, and straighten the teeth all before your child reaches the teen years. What should I expect at my child’s first orthodontic appointment? Your child’s first orthodontic screening will include a visual examination as well as x-rays of the teeth and head. Your child’s orthodontist may also ask you questions about your child’s habits, such as thumb and finger-sucking and sleep-related questions such as snoring or mouth breathing. Based on the results of this analysis, the orthodontist will discuss options and time-frames for treatment if applicable. Will I need to follow any special instructions if my child is fitted for an orthodontic appliance? Yes. If your child is fitted for a fixed orthodontic appliance, such as braces, you will need to follow careful instructions to ensure the orthodontic device is not damaged or broken. This includes monitoring your child’s diet to ensure it does not include hard foods, candies, popcorn kernels, or anything else that could cause damage. You’ll also need to ensure your child properly brushes and flosses around the orthodontic appliance to protect the teeth from decay during treatment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Orthodontics for Adults - Orthodontics for Adults</image:title>
<image:caption>When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you wish you had a more attractive smile? Then why not make a change for the better? After all, braces are not just for kids. Teeth can be straightened at any age, and a new smile will last for the rest of your life. A pleasing smile is great to have no matter what your age or lifestyle because when you look your best you feel good about yourself. The self-confidence gained from a beautiful smile is rewarding in many ways - helping to get that new job or promotion; getting a date with that special guy or gal; or looking your best in the wedding and anniversary pictures. Yes, improving your smile is always a change for the better. Did you know… There are many myths surrounding braces and adult orthodontics: MYTH: Adults don’t get braces. FACT: Approximately 20 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults over age 18. MYTH: Braces are too embarrassing as an adult. FACT: Today’s braces can be made from ceramic to blend in with your natural tooth shade. Many adults also opt for removable braces made of clear and discreet aligning trays. MYTH: I don’t want to spend years in braces. FACT: You probably won’t have to. Many adults complete orthodontic treatment in just months. More Than Beautiful Smiles Although the importance of a nice smile should never be underestimated, the orthodontic specialist has another equally significant treatment goal - to improve the health of your teeth and gums. Did you know that crooked teeth and bad bites can seriously affect general oral health and sometimes jaw joints (TMJ problems)? Crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain and in time may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Bad bites can also result in abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and damage to supporting bone and gum tissue. Jaw joint (TMJ) pain and associated headaches can sometimes be attributed to crooked teeth and incorrect bites. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Treatment by a specialist to correct the original problem is often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years. Never Too Old To Be Your Best Orthodontic treatment is always a change for the better regardless of your age. The biological process involved in tooth movement is the same in both adults and children. The health of your teeth, gums and supporting bone is what's most important in determining the prospects for improving your smile and dental health. Because an adult's facial bones are no longer growing, certain corrections cannot be accomplished with braces alone. But don't let that discourage you. Very dramatic facial changes are now being achieved with a combined approach of surgery and orthodontics. Should you require this type of treatment, Dr. Jarrell will explain the procedures. Frequently Asked Questions Am I a candidate for adult orthodontics at Jarrell Orthodontics? You may be a candidate for adult orthodontics if your teeth are crowded, overlapping, crooked, or have gaps between them. To find out more about your treatment options, schedule a consultation. What should I expect during adult orthodontic treatment? During your orthodontic screening, you will undergo an examination and digital imaging to determine the position of your teeth and bite. Dr. Jarrell will map out an orthodontic treatment plan designed to give you the straightest teeth possible in the least amount of time. Depending on the type of braces you choose – traditional or removable – you’ll be fitted for your appliance and given instructions on how frequently to return for follow-up appointments. Will I need to follow any special instructions while I have my braces? Yes. If you are wearing clear aligners, you’ll need to change out your trays every few days or weeks. You’ll also be instructed to wear your aligners at all times, with the exception of during meals and while brushing your teeth. If you have traditional braces, you may be given special instructions to avoid biting down on hard or chewy foods, such as popcorn kernels, ice and taffy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment for Chidren - Two Phase Treatment for Children</image:title>
<image:caption>Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a dual step method of aligning a child’s teeth and producing a functional bite. Usually, two-step orthodontic treatments begin between the ages of 7 and 9, when many of the primary teeth remain in a child’s mouth. The braces stay on for about a year, after which time they are removed and replaced with a retainer. This resting phase lasts 2-3 years, after which time children return to the orthodontist for the second phase of treatment. From start to finish, two-phase orthodontics takes longer than one phase, but most orthodontists and parents believe the results are often worth the extended treatment time. Did you know… the American Association of Orthodontists endorses early childhood orthodontic treatments? The Association recommends an initial screening for every child no later than age 7. Because children this age have achieved approximately 80 percent of their total facial growth, a first phase of treatment during this time period can leverage remaining growth. By the time they reach age 11 or 12 (when the second phase of treatment is initiated), children have achieved more than 90 percent of their lifetime facial growth. Frequently Asked Questions Does my child need two-phase orthodontic treatment? The only way to know if your child needs orthodontic treatment of any kind is by visiting an orthodontist. Children as young as 5 or 6 can be screened, although the AAO recommends waiting no longer than age 7. If your child is over age 7 and has not yet been screened, make an appointment for a consultation at your earliest convenience. What are some benefits of two-phase treatment? Some benefits of Two-Phase treatment are: -Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth -Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth -Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth -Reducing the need for tooth removal -Reducing treatment time with braces in the second (comprehensive) phase What should I expect during a two-phase treatment? Between the first and second treatment phases, you’ll need to bring your child to the orthodontist periodically to monitor progress and check the condition of your child’s retainer. He or she may also need occasional x-rays to ensure everything is progressing smoothly and as planned. Once your child has lost his or her final primary tooth, it will be time to get the second set of braces – usually around the age of 12 or 13. Will I need to follow any special care instructions while my child is undergoing two-step orthodontic treatment? Yes. Orthodontic appliances are designed for durability but can easily break when not cared for. You’ll need to ensure your child is following all directions for brushing around the braces and also exclude hard candies or foods that could damage the appliance components.</image:caption>

<image:title>Information About Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment - Interceptive Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>The field of orthodontics spans beyond corrective treatments. It also includes preventive care, which is used to prevent the development of a bad bite or crooked and overcrowded teeth. In fact, some children who undergo preventive treatments can avoid the need for far more invasive treatments later in life. By the time The Woodlands preventive orthodontic treatments are complete, children have an adequate amount of jaw space for permanent teeth to erupt. Did you know… It is important that your child undergo an orthodontic screening no later than age 7. Preventive care is only effective when used early – usually while the majority of primary teeth are still intact. Some of the most common preventive orthodontic treatments at Jarrell Orthodontics include: Space maintainers – to hold the space of a primary tooth that has fallen out prematurely Cross Bite Correction - the use of removable appliances to correct dental crossbites Tooth extractions – used to remove primary teeth that have not fallen out on their own that are interfering with the normal eruption of the adult teeth. Frequently Asked Questions Does my child need preventive orthodontic treatment? Your child may need preventive care if he or she has malocclusion, inadequate jaw space, has teeth erupting in the wrong spaces, or has missing primary teeth lost due to decay or trauma. If you suspect that your child could need preventive orthodontic, schedule a consultation immediately. What should I expect during preventive orthodontic treatment? Preventive treatment varies from child to child. Some types of preventive appliances are fixed in your child’s mouth, and require multiple visits to ensure a perfect fit. If your child’s appliance is removable, you will be given instructions for how and when your child should wear the device. You can also expect to make occasional orthodontic visits for the duration of your child’s preventive treatment to measure progress and make adjustments as needed. Will I need to follow any special instructions while my child is undergoing preventive treatment? Yes. In addition to ensuring your child’s appliance is being worn correctly, you’ll need to also prevent your child from consuming foods that could damage the appliance while being worn. If your child’s appliance is removable, you’ll need to clean it regularly and store it according to your orthodontist’s instructions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Instructions For Orthodontic Patients - Treatment Instructions</image:title>
<image:caption>The process of placing an orthodontic appliance is non-surgical, but it does require special post-procedural instructions to minimize patient discomfort and protect each patient’s appliance from damage. Failure to follow these instructions can prolong treatment, make treatment more costly, or even result in a dental or orthodontic emergency. Did you know… that it is normal for orthodontic patients to experience some pain or discomfort following orthodontic treatment? Usually, soreness occurs in the muscles and teeth and can last for one to two days. During this time, many patients find difficulty eating – especially foods that are hard or crunchy. To relieve discomfort, it is recommended that patients temporarily consume a diet of soft foods or otherwise cut harder foods, like apples, into very small bites. Do I need to follow my orthodontist’s post-op instructions? Yes. Every directive is given for a reason, so it is imperative that you follow doctor’s recommendations between orthodontic appointments. Also, never leave your orthodontist’s office without the supplies necessary to facilitate post-op care. This may include acquiring orthodontic wax to protect your cheeks and gums from poking wires, or obtaining enough elastic bands and cleaning aids to last until your next orthodontic visit. What types of post-op instructions will I need to follow? Instructions vary from patient to patient and according to treatment. But if you have a fixed orthodontic appliance, you will probably have to follow special dietary guidelines to prevent damage to your braces or other orthodontic appliance. Most dietary restrictions include avoiding foods that are very hard or sticky, such as ice and chewy candies. If you do not have a fixed orthodontic appliance, your post-op instructions will include information about storing and cleansing your device. Will my post-op instructions apply to every visit? Possibly. There may be some visits where you are told to wear elastics or activate your expander until your next visit. It is important to never leave your orthodontist’s office until you have a thorough understanding of your responsibilities at home. Continue to use proper brushing and flossing techniques, visit your dentist for periodic cleanings and examinations, and contact your orthodontist’s office if you have any post-op questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>First Aid Tips for Braces and Orthodontics - First Aid for Braces</image:title>
<image:caption>Poking Wires If the main wire has come out of the tube on the back molar tooth, you may attempt to reinsert the wire with a pair of needle nosed pliers or tweezers. If you are having a difficult time and the wire is not sticking you, place a piece of wax or sugarless gum over the area. If the wire is sticking you and wax does not help, the wire can be cut with a small wire cutter or fingernail clipper close to the back of the last brace. Loose Brackets If a bracket comes off it will remain connected to the main wire by either the sliding door or clip (in the case of self-ligating brackets) or a little rubber ring. You may use a pair of tweezers to reposition the brace if it flips around the wire and becomes a source of irritation. Call your orthodontist's office to inform them of your situation. If a bracket breaks off, save the bracket and call your orthodontist to schedule a repair visit. If you swallow any part of your braces, most of the time it will pass. Eat a high fiber diet such as rolls, muffins and cereal for a few days. However, if difficulty breathing is experienced, you should seek immediate medical attention. X-rays will be taken to determine the position of the swallowed piece and your physicians will counsel you on your options concerning retrieval of the stray piece. Broken Retainers If a retainer cracks or is broken, bring all the pieces to your orthodontist for evaluation and a professional repair. Other Situations If your teeth are sore after a monthly visit to your orthodontist, take Tylenol or ibuprofen or Aleve unless you are allergic to them. Rinsing your mouth with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water can also be soothing. Placing a numbing agent on your gum such as Orabase - B can also help. If food becomes stuck between your teeth, use dental floss or a proxy brush (the tufted brushes we give you when you get your braces on) to dislodge the food. If you cut the inside of your cheek, gums or tongue, apply finger pressure to the bleeding site for several minutes. If the bleeding won't clot, call your orthodontist or primary care-family dentist. If a permanent tooth is knocked out of your mouth completely, pick the tooth up by its top or crown, not by its root(s). Inspect the tooth. If the tooth is clean, place the tooth back into its socket immediately. If the tooth is dirty, rinse the tooth off by jiggling it in a cup off water or milk before placing it back in its socket. Do not scrub the tooth. Compare the appearance of the tooth to neighboring teeth to make sure the tooth is not turned around backward. Hold the tooth in its socket and immediately go to your primary care-family dentist. If it is not possible for you to reinsert the tooth in its socket, place the tooth in a container of milk or cool water and carry it to your dentist immediately. If the tooth remains outside of the mouth for over 30 minutes, it will seldom survive.</image:caption>
